PNG's Ok Tedi Backs Major Road Link, Boosts Development in Telefomin
Ok Tedi Mining Limited (Ok Tedi) has reaffirmed its commitment to Papua New Guinea’s development, announcing continued infrastructure investment through its Infrastructure Tax Credit Scheme (ITCS).
At the official opening of the K267 million Tabubil–Telefomin road, Ok Tedi Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Kedi Ilimbit said the 100% PNG-owned company will keep delivering infrastructure projects that improve the lives of local communities. Prime Minister James Marape attended the ceremony, which also featured the groundbreaking for the Telefomin–Oksapmin–Kopiago road and the unveiling of the Telefomin town masterplan.
The 75-kilometre road, built under the Government’s Connect PNG program in partnership with Ok Tedi through the Tax Credit Scheme, links Telefomin to Tabubil and sets the stage for future extensions to Hela and Vanimo. Mr Ilimbit said the project will ease access to markets, schools and health services, lowering the cost of goods and fostering social and economic growth.
Reflecting on his own schooling in the area, Mr Ilimbit noted that students who once walked for days to reach classes can now travel by road. “This is a dream come true for the Min people and a momentous occasion in our history,” he said, adding that the road would lift living standards across the district.
Mr Ilimbit thanked contractors and the government for their support, highlighting the role of Telefomin MP and Works Minister Solan Mirisim and Prime Minister Marape. He stressed that such projects would not be possible without government partnership, despite Ok Tedi’s leadership in funding.
Since 1997, Ok Tedi has contributed about PGK948.7 million to projects across Western Province and Telefomin, spanning health, education, law and justice, and transport. The company supports development through the ITCS program, the Ok Tedi Development Foundation and other partners.
Ok Tedi said it remains proud of its 100% PNG ownership and pledged to continue backing nation-building initiatives over the next 50 years.
