PNG Mine Deploys World-First Radar Technology at Ok Tedi

PNG mining company Ok Tedi Mining Limited has deployed and commissioned two ArcSAR Neo radar systems to strengthen monitoring of mine slopes, making it the first company in the world to acquire and put the next-generation technology into operation.

The new radar system is designed to provide more detailed information on ground movement and improve the way geotechnical risks are identified and managed across the Ok Tedi mining operation.

Developed by IDS GeoRadar, a Hexagon company, the ArcSAR Neo is equipped with advanced processing and monitoring technology designed for demanding mining environments.

Ok Tedi said the system can continue collecting information during network interruptions and can automatically reposition itself after being moved to accommodate blasting activities.

The technology is particularly suited to the company’s operating conditions, where mining activities are taking place in increasingly narrow and deeper areas of the pit.

Since being commissioned, the radar has delivered improvements in the quality and reliability of monitoring data, according to Ok Tedi.

The system also helps reduce interference caused by atmospheric conditions and signal distortions, supporting more accurate assessments and reducing false alarms.

Its higher resolution allows very small ground movements to be detected earlier, giving technical teams more time to assess potential slope instability and take appropriate action.

The equipment has also been designed to withstand difficult site conditions, including the high rainfall experienced in the Ok Tedi area, with improvements intended to reduce problems such as water entering the equipment.

Ok Tedi technicians who have been trained and certified are responsible for operating and maintaining the system, with specialist assistance available from IDS GeoRadar.

The company said it would continue monitoring the technology's performance under local conditions while incorporating its results into its wider slope monitoring programme.

Ok Tedi said the investment would also support further training and development of technical personnel as the company works to strengthen safety and mining performance.
