Marape explained that the mine was shut down a decade ago due to poor financial returns that did not cover operational costs. This was largely because the mine depended heavily on air transport for personnel and supplies, which increased expenses.
“The entire mining operation was supported by helicopter flights from Port Moresby, making it financially unsustainable,” he noted.
He added that the new leaseholder has been innovative in constructing a road to the mine site to reduce reliance on costly air transport.
Marape also said that when the mine becomes fully operational and profitable, landowners will receive a 40 percent share of the State’s 55 percent earnings.
Goilala MP Casmiro Aia had raised questions in Parliament regarding the mine’s current status, benefits for the Goilala community, and whether a Special Mining Lease would be granted.
Marape confirmed he would instruct the Mineral Resource Authority to keep local districts and provinces informed on progress during licensing.
