PNG Leaders Unite to Push Mt. Kare Gold and Silver Mine Forward

The long-delayed Mt. Kare gold and silver mine project in Papua New Guinea  has returned to the national spotlight, with Enga Governor Sir Peter Ipatas demanding answers in Parliament over why the multi-billion-kina development has yet to begin after more than eight years.

Located on the border of Enga and Hela provinces, Mt. Kare is known for its rich deposits of gold and silver. However, despite its potential, the project has been stalled for years, leaving local communities waiting in frustration. Sir Peter told Parliament that many landowners have died without seeing any benefits from the mine and warned against further delays.

Sir Peter also raised concerns that personal interests may have played a role in slowing progress. He called on Minister for Mining Rainbo Paita to give a clear explanation to the people.

In response, Minister Paita assured Parliament that Mt. Kare is now a top priority for the government of Prime Minister James Marape. He said a major obstacle — a protracted legal battle between companies over development rights — had been resolved by the Supreme Court, clearing the way for the project to proceed.

“All key leaders from Enga and Hela, including local MPs, are now united in their support for Mt. Kare,” Paita said, adding that such unity is critical to moving forward. He confirmed he is awaiting a formal recommendation from the Mining Advisory Committee to select a developer with the financial strength and technical expertise to carry out the work.

Minister Paita also called on all political leaders to refrain from interference, stressing that the government is committed to fast-tracking the mine’s development under the Mining Act.

Both Sir Peter and Minister Paita agreed the people of Mt. Kare have waited long enough. With legal barriers lifted and political leaders aligned, they expressed renewed hope that the project will finally be realised, unlocking economic opportunities for the surrounding communities and contributing to Papua New Guinea’s mineral wealth.
