Kumul Petroleum Completes Seismic Programme in Papua New Guinea’s Kimu and Barikewa Licences

Kumul Petroleum Holdings Limited (KPHL), Papua New Guinea’s national petroleum and energy company, has successfully concluded its seismic programme in the Kimu and Barikewa licences, where it operates as the licence holder. The programme, which marks a significant step in Papua New Guinea’s exploration efforts, was finalized last week with the completion of the final seismic shot in the Kimu licence area. KPHL managing director Wapu Sonk confirmed that camp demobilisation is now underway, signaling the end of this critical phase of exploration.

The seismic campaign forms part of an extensive effort to gather vital geological data across KPHL’s two petroleum retention licences. According to Sonk, the primary objective of the programme was to enhance understanding of the petroleum resources already identified in these areas, with the aim of increasing estimates of oil and gas reserves. Additionally, the work sought to refine the locations for future delineation wells and identify new exploration targets.

Sonk highlighted the importance of safety throughout the project, crediting the strong safety records to the expertise of the operator, O.M. Holdings Limited (Oilmin), and the dedication of KPHL’s team. “This marks the first exploration initiative undertaken by Kumul Petroleum since its establishment in 2010,” he noted. “It’s a significant step forward for Papua New Guinea’s energy sector, and we are eagerly anticipating the results as we plan the next phase of development.”

The seismic campaign, executed by Oilmin, spanned approximately six months. Sonk explained that the process was labour-intensive, requiring the construction of six seismic lines and employing 477 local workers from Gulf and Western provinces. “This project not only advanced our exploration objectives but also provided meaningful employment opportunities for nearby communities in Papua New Guinea,” he said.

KPHL and Oilmin collaborated closely with local communities impacted by the seismic activities. Although the fieldwork required only a temporary presence in the region, the companies extended support to local primary schools in Kaiam and Kumusi. “Community backing has been vital to the success of this project,” Sonk emphasized. “Without their cooperation, this work would not have been possible.”

Kumul Petroleum is investing significantly in its onshore and offshore petroleum retention licences in Papua New Guinea. These efforts aim to delineate the oil and gas resources within these areas and develop economically viable strategies for their extraction. “Our focus remains on unlocking the full potential of these resources while ensuring sustainable benefits for the nation,” Sonk added.
