Issues concerning small-scale mining and the potential inclusion of Papua New Guinea’s (PNG) District Development Authorities (DDAs) in the Wafi-Golpu mining development forum will be brought to the attention of Mining Minister Rainbo Paita, according to Wau Waria MP Marsh Narewec.
Narewec stated that Paita’s recent appointment as Mining Minister was beneficial for Morobe and expressed hope that the minister would reconsider the exclusion of DDAs and MPs from the development forum. He explained that under the current Mining Act, representatives from Wau Waria, Huon-Gulf, and Bulolo are not part of the forum but believed their participation was necessary to advocate for their people.
Concerns regarding small-scale alluvial mining were also highlighted, particularly the need for regulatory improvements in application processes, renewals, and the issuance of exploration licenses. Narewec pointed out that the impact on the environment and public infrastructure, including roads, required urgent attention from mining authorities.
The MP further expressed concerns over foreign developers partnering with alluvial miners, alleging that many showed little regard for environmental laws and community welfare. He noted that financial resources and machinery gave these developers an unfair advantage, often allowing them to bypass regulations. He emphasized that mining lease conversions needed to be conducted transparently to ensure clarity on ownership.
Additionally, Narewec called for improvements in the alluvial mining lease allocation process. He stated that such leases were being granted to individuals without proper identification, whereas the law specifies that only customary landowners should be eligible. He urged authorities to refine the system to prevent irregularities.
