Newmont’s Lihir operations have resumed their Apprenticeship Training Program, with 59 local Lihirian trainees signing agreements with the company and the National Apprenticeship and Trade Testing Board (NATTB). This marks the program's largest intake, following its suspension in 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
On August 13, the group, which includes 43 male and 16 female trainees, was formally accepted into three trade apprenticeships: Electrical Mechanic, Maintenance Fitting and Machining, and Heavy Equipment Fitting.
In welcoming the apprentices, Lihir’s Head of Operations, Troy Morris, expressed his enthusiasm about the new intake. “We are excited to have you join our teams, to learn, grow, and help us run the mine and operation in years to come. You are creating the pathway to inspire and guide others to join the apprentice program and work at Lihir mine in the future,” he said.
Lihir’s Manager of Human Resources, Mariano Dayag, highlighted Newmont’s commitment to sustainability and the importance of reviving the Apprenticeship Program. “The future is in your hands. We are here to support and guide you and facilitate your development through the apprenticeship program. This is a milestone as we work with the NATTB with your indenture signed to formally recognize you as apprentices,” Dayag remarked during his address to the new apprentices. He also encouraged them to stay focused, prioritize safety, and embody Newmont’s values throughout their training.
The Apprenticeship agreements were signed by the apprentices, Newmont Lihir’s Principal HR Technical Training, Sebulon Ragi, and NATTB Acting Director, Brian Clowes. The program will span four years, during which the apprentices will undergo rigorous training to develop their skills.
Looking ahead, Newmont Lihir’s HR Technical Training team plans to expand the program in 2025 to include trainees in the Metal Fabrication and Welding trade, further demonstrating the company’s commitment to developing the future workforce of Lihir and contributing to the growth of the local community.
