PNG's OK Tedi Mine works on female staff talent, skills

Papua New Guinea's OK Tedi Mining Limited (OTML) continues to train and develop the skills and knowledge of its women employees through the implementation of the company’s “rise programme”.

OTML people and culture general manager Mark Stone said 33 women employees graduated with a certificate of participation last month after completing the seven-month training programme.

In April, OTML began the third cohort of the programme that was initiated in 2021 It was aimed at empowering and developing female employees to be effective in their roles and be better placed for future promotional opportunities.

Two graduation ceremonies were held on Nov 22 and Nov 29 in Tabubil, Western.

“To date, 90 women employees of OTML have participated in the programme,” Stone said.

“Ok Tedi is an equal-opportunity employer and it is in our best interest to ensure all members of the workforce, irrespective of gender, are developed to perform to the best of their ability.

“In doing so, we will have a diverse and inclusive workforce capable of world-class performance.”

Stone said the move to ensuring OTML had a better mix of genders in the workforce had evolved over time, starting with the development of the Ok Tedi Women’s Network and complemented by the commitment and support of the executive leadership team.

“I am not a fan of off-the-shelf programmes,” he said.

“I wanted a programme that was specific for Ok Tedi; one that understood our culture, systems, processes, and challenges and is tailored specifically for our Ok Tedi women.

“I hope the participants feel the same about this programme as the results are amazing, so, congratulations to all the participants, mentors and facilitators.”

Programme director Rosemary Howard said the programme was geared towards achieving OTML’s vision and objectives.

Mining Leaders Group managing director and chief executive officer Brett Cunningham, also the programme facilitator, said prior graduates from the programme were now mentors for the subsequent participants, which was a great contribution.

“The programme is focused on developing capabilities such as confidence, communication, self-leadership and having a growth mindset,” he said.

Cunningham said the participants’ learning and development had been strong, with feedback indicating that participants would leave the programme feeling confident, empowered and valued.

“The Mining Leaders Group, are impressed with OTML’s focus on developing and retaining female talent.”
