Newcrest Mining Limited is suspending its incoming fly-in fly-out operations from Australia into Lihir in Papua New Guinea effective this week.
Outgoing flights will remain in place.
This is an additional contribution by the company to global and national efforts to impede the spread of COVID-19 transmission.
According to a statement, the management team at Lihir is largely residential and the vast proportion of the company’s overall workforce at Lihir is Papua New Guineans.
This team will continue to operate the mine safely and with proper observance of health protocols.
This move is in line with Australian and PNG government requirements, including the Australian Government’s advice to Australians not to travel overseas until further notice.
The mining company said that there are no suspected or confirmed cases on Lihir.
The two employees that were being kept under observation at the Lihir Medical Centre were cleared and discharged.
