Locals in PNG Hidden Valley Mine in Morobe Threaten to shut down Mine Over COVID-19

Landowners and locals in the Hidden Valley, Morobe Province have threatened to shut down the gone mine fearing the spread of the COVID-19.

This comes after an expatriate working with the mining company was tested positive with Covid-19.

Police in Morobe said the locals have sent their demand through to the company management and have threatened to take further action if nothing is done to shut it down.

Provincial Police Commander Alex N’Drasel said 16 police personnel have been deployed to the area to meet with the locals and ensure the situation is contained.

He said there have been no damages to the mining properties.

The PPC also confirmed that there is unhappiness amongst the public in Morobe at this time after the first case of COVID-19 was confirmed in the province.

He said however there is normalcy in the province and police were on standby to respond in the best way they can to any situation that may arise.
