Papua New Guinea governement has approved more than K7 million for the continuation of callout operations by the joint security forces.
PNG Prime Minister Peter O’Neill said Cabinet endorsed the funding for the joint security operations to implement medium and long-term strategies and to address illegal mining and the break-down of law and order at the Porgera gold mine in Enga.
He said in a statement that Porgera valley had seen an influx of outsiders, increasing the local population from 4000 to about 60,000. “With these new arrivals, there has been a significant deterioration in law and order, causing an increase in illegal mining in the Porgera Special Mining Lease areas. The Government callout to the Porgera gold mine is a Cabinet-endorsed joint operation to address criminal activities in and around the mining township,” he said.
O’Neill said the Porgera Joint Venture had been supportive towards these operations
