Juffa Questions Foreign Control in Alluvial Mining in PNG
Papua New Guinea's Northern Province Governor, Gary Juffa, has voiced strong concerns over the foreign takeover of small-scale alluvial mining in Morobe, calling for immediate action.
Addressing Parliament, Juffa shared observations from a recent visit to Wau-Bulolo, where he found that foreigners are now heavily involved in what was once a local enterprise.

He questioned the role and vigilance of key agencies such as Immigration, Mining, Labour, and Police, asking why they have not intervened.
Juffa suggested that declining gold exports may point to large-scale smuggling, facilitated by the rise in unauthorized foreign participation, particularly from Chinese nationals operating with heavy machinery.
In response, Minister for Lands and Immigration John Rosso confirmed that there has been a sharp rise in such mining activities, often enabled by local operators forming joint ventures with foreigners.
Rosso admitted the issue is complex and said he plans to convene discussions with relevant agencies to find solutions.
