OTML Managing Director and CEO Kedi Ilimbit made the appeal during the opening of OTML’s new 150 self-contained accommodation units for its Bige Operations on Thursday, March 13. He stated that while OTML fulfills its corporate social responsibility by supporting sustainable community initiatives, greater benefits would be achieved if business partners reinvested in OTML operations or other impact-driven projects within the province.
Mr. Ilimbit emphasized the importance of reinvesting in Ok Tedi Operations as either passive or active investors to ensure financial resources remain within the province to drive sustainable change. He urged stakeholders not to invest elsewhere but to contribute to projects that would positively impact local communities.
He further noted that while the newly opened dongas were a significant investment, other lucrative business opportunities existed, including electrification, water, and road sealing projects. He stressed the need for financial resources to be retained within the communities where OTML operates to support long-term development.
According to Mr. Ilimbit, the newly opened accommodation units, named ‘The Ilimbit Dongas,’ were co-owned by the LMP79 Trust (25%), the Alice River Trust (25%), and the CMCA Women and Children’s Trust (50%), with a total investment of K10,563,380 over nine years. OTML’s Bige operations would cover all maintenance costs, and impacted communities were expected to receive a guaranteed return of K23,503,964 after the contract period.
OTML confirmed that these units would replace common-shared accommodation facilities, ensuring improved living conditions for staff. Additionally, foundation works for another 150 self-contained accommodation dongas at a separate Bige Operations site were already underway, offering further investment opportunities for stakeholders.
Mr. Ilimbit congratulated all stakeholders involved in the successful completion of the project and expressed hope for continued collaborations on similar initiatives in the future.
