Ok Tedi Mining Limited Hosts UPNG Geoscience Students for Hands-On Industry Training

Ok Tedi Mining Limited (OTML) recently welcomed six geoscience students from the University of Papua New Guinea’s (UPNG) School of Earth Sciences for an intensive eight-week Industrial Training Program. The students were integrated into OTML’s Mining Operations Business Unit, gaining practical exposure in several key departments such as Exploration, Resource Development, and Mine Planning.

Throughout their training, the students were involved in a variety of tasks, including on-site visits, data collection, and assisting with technical reports. They received valuable insights into different areas of mining operations, including Geotechnical Engineering, Drill and Blast, Hydrogeology/Dewatering, and Mine Geology/Grade Control. These experiences gave the students a comprehensive understanding of the technical challenges within the mining sector.

James Bu, OTML's Manager of Mine Technical Services, highlighted the company’s ongoing commitment to developing local talent as part of its strategic focus. Bu pointed out that helping to cultivate the next generation of leaders in the mining industry aligns with OTML’s "Growth 2050 Strategy," which aims to build a skilled and capable workforce for the future. He emphasized that offering students real-world training is crucial in ensuring they are well-prepared for the demands of the industry after graduation.

Bu also stressed the importance of stronger ties between educational institutions and the industry. He noted that for the mining sector to remain competitive and sustainable, future employees must be equipped with not only academic knowledge but also hands-on experience. "It’s essential that these students are ready to start contributing from day one," he said.

Ian Strachan, OTML’s Manager of Training & Capability Development, commended the students for their dedication and demonstrated skills throughout the program. He shared that OTML had hosted more than 20 industrial trainees in the past six to eight months and aimed to increase that number in the near future. Dr. Joseph Espi, an Associate Professor at UPNG’s Earth Sciences Department, also expressed gratitude for OTML’s continued support of student development, noting that the partnership offers students critical exposure to the mining industry and helps bridge the gap between academic theory and practical application.
