Ok Tedi Mining Limited (OTML) has remained dedicated to nurturing the next generation of Papua New Guinea’s mining engineers and administrators for over 40 years. As part of its ongoing efforts to develop the nation’s mining sector, the company is currently providing training for 11 undergraduate students through its Industrial Training Program. This initiative is part of the Undergraduate Scholarship Scheme (USS), which aims to support high-performing students in relevant fields.

On November 24, 2024, General Manager of Strategic Business Development & Optimization, Alan Bong, officially welcomed the students at the Dr. Weiss Training Centre in Tabubil. Mr. Bong emphasized OTML’s commitment to developing the country’s human resources, stating, “We have an excellent training program, but it will require your 100% input. If you contribute fully with effort, commitment, and discipline, you will succeed in your training here.”
The students, nine from the University of Technology and two from Pacific Adventist University (PAU), are pursuing various disciplines, including Mining Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mineral Processing, Applied Physics & Electronics, Electrical & Communication, Surveying, Chemistry, and Environmental Science. Over the course of their three-month industrial training, they will work closely with various OTML departments, gaining valuable industry experience that complements their academic studies.
The USS, reintroduced in 2023 after a hiatus since 2014, aims to provide students with hands-on work exposure while strengthening OTML’s relationship with universities that supply graduates for the company’s training programs. Since its inception in 2007, OTML has invested over K830,000 in the USS program, sponsoring 60 undergraduate students to date.
As a 100% PNG-owned company, OTML remains committed to developing Papua New Guinea’s workforce and fostering strong industry-institution relationships to ensure that students are well-prepared for careers in the global mining sector.
