The Mineral Resources Authority (MRA) of Papua New Guinea had the privilege of hosting a delegation from the Department of Mines of Botswana, a Southern African nation, on Friday, March 22, 2024. Led by Managing Director Jerry Garry, the MRA extended a warm welcome to the Botswanan delegation and provided them with an insightful overview of Papua New Guinea's mining industry, as well as an introduction to the functions of the MRA.
The delegation from Botswana was comprised of notable figures from the Department of Mines, including Director of Mines Ofentse Ditsele, Principal Mining Surveyor Kabelo Ogaketse, Principal Geo-Information Officer Pelonomi Matlotse, and Geologist Ndiwo Lesetedi. Their visit to the MRA was driven by a keen interest in understanding and potentially adopting Papua New Guinea's tenements management system within their own department.
During their visit, the delegation had the opportunity to explore various aspects of the MRA's operations. They were particularly interested in gaining insights into the tenements management system, with hopes of implementing a similar system back home in Botswana. Additionally, the delegation had the chance to visit the MRA's Mineral Production Data Hub, where they could observe firsthand how data is collected and managed to support decision-making processes within the mining sector. Furthermore, they toured the MRA's core-shed, gaining valuable insights into the practical aspects of mineral exploration and resource assessment.
The exchange between the MRA and the Department of Mines of Botswana underscores the importance of collaboration and knowledge sharing in the global mining community. As Papua New Guinea and Botswana both navigate the complexities of their respective mining industries, such interactions serve to foster mutual learning and facilitate the adoption of best practices. The visit also highlights Papua New Guinea's role as a valuable source of expertise and innovation in the field of mineral resource management, with the MRA playing a pivotal role in driving sustainable development in the country's mining sector.
