Arawa Solar Energy Upgrades

Arawa will be among the beneficiaries of a new solar energy investment program affirmed by Australian High Commissioner to PNG Jon Philp.

Investments in Arawa and Aitape are part of Australia’s support for upgrades to several provincial mini-grids owned by PNG Power Ltd worth K50 million.

The upgrades will involve customised renewable energy solutions including solar photvoltaic arrays and battery energy storage.

By reducing reliance on diesel the upgrades are set to reduce carbon emissions by 2,830 tonnes in the first year alone as well as reduce operating costs.

“Thousands of households and businesses will gain access to more reliable, stable, and sustainable electricity through upgrades to provincial grids, Mr Philp said.

“Australia is committed to working with PNG to increase its solar infrastructure and support the transition to renewable energy starting with these projects Aitape and Arawa.”

A PNG delegation including Minister for State Enterprises William Duma observed the application of new technology at the Majura Solar Farm on the outskirts of Canberra as part of participation in the 29th Australia-Papua New Guinea Ministerial Forum.
