Job Summary
We are currently seeking to recruit a Graduate Geologist to join our highly dynamic workforce at our Simberi Operations. The position will be part of the team responsible for delivery of quality outcomes in regards to ore delivery and resource optimisation.
Job: Graduate Geologist with St Barbara
The Role
Reporting to the Senior Geologist; The Graduate Geologist will assist with quality geological field work. Duties include both technical and non-technical functions associated with mineral exploration including, but not being limited to:
- Assisting in the design, evaluation and execution of operational programs;
- Logging of drill holes;
- Mapping and filing reports;
- Ore spotting and sampling.
The Graduate Geologist shall also perform other related duties, as required by the Senior Geologist.

This is a FIFO position; the roster is a 21/14 roster. Point of Hire is restricted to Kavieng/Rabaul/Port Moresby/Lae/Mt Hagen or Tabar group of Islands (Locals are encouraged to apply).
Key responsibilities include:
Technical accountabilities
- Ensuring own Health & Safety as well as that of all other workers, identifying and maintaining safe work practices and completing all required safety training
- Providing good quality surface mapping and geochemical sampling
- Assisting with the interpretation of results (geology, geochemistry and geophysics)
- Maintaining database protocols
- Undertaking drill hole logging and sampling
- Preparing reports as required (daily, weekly, technical, QA/QC etc.)
- Working autonomously in a progressive team environment with access to senior technical advice.
- Assisting with supervision of Field Assistants.
Scheduling accountabilities
- Managing effective use of available resources, including own time, in support of the delivery of the Geology team/crew.
People accountabilities
- Contributing to an effective team/crew.
- Ensuring own work performance meets all role requirements; and taking appropriate professional development actions
Qualifications, skills, and experience required:
Behaviour consistent with St Barbara’s Values
- Knowledgeable in Geological concepts, methodologies and case histories.
- Knowledge of all relevant agreements involving the company.
- Knowledge of aspirations and objectives of key bodies with which the Company deals (Landowners associations, Mines Department, Environmental Protection Authority).
- Skills in the use of software/peripheral equipment to analyse data, prepare reports etc.
- Interpersonal skills, particularly those required to work effectively in remote locations
- At least 1-year relevant geology experience
