Barrick limits Electricity Supply to Mining Communities in PNG

Barrick Niugini Limited has reduced electricity supply to the mining township at Paiam and the mine communities.

In a statement, BNL who's the majority owner and developer of the Porgera mine in Enga province said it's taking this action, due to lack of revenue as a result of the mine's closure.

It said local electricity, which is currently being provided free of charge is being temporarily reduced between 6pm and 6am daily, during the current Care and Maintenance period.

BNL said it has no other option but to continue to reduce operational costs.

The company is currently working with other electricity partners to continue supporting the Paiam Hospital, Porgera Urban Clinic, Paiam Police Station and Courthouse, to remain operational during this period.
