Barrick To Discuss Extension of Mining Lease For Porgera in PNG

Developer of the Pogera Mine in PNG's Enga Province, BarrickNiugini Ltd, is looking to further engage with the Government to discuss proposals in detail for the extension of the Special Mining Lease (SML) of the mine.

Barrick's Manager Corporate Affairs Patrick Bindon says the approval of the SML by the state will see Porgera operate in the country for another 20 years.

Mr. Bindon told FM100 News, an application to extend the mine's special mining lease for an additional twenty years was submitted in June 2017, and is currently being considered by the PNG Government.

On August 17 this year Porgera’s mining license expired, however under the current mining act, the mine can continue to operate while the application is under consideration by the Sate Negotiating Team.

Mr. Bindon says Barrick has held productive and positive meetings with Prime Minister James Marape on three occasions since June of this year, and has recently proposed new benefit-sharing arrangements that would deliver over US$3 billion in economic benefits to PNG over the next two decades.

He says BNL looks forward to reach a mutually beneficial agreement for the SML extension.
