Mining technology enhanced in PNG

MINE operators in Papua New Guiena will be required to use the best technology in managing mine waste after a proper mining waste management policy is put in place, an official says.
PNG Department of Mineral Policy and Geohazard Secretary,  Shadrach Himata, said that last Friday during the signing of  a memorandum of understanding between Government agencies and the Japanese International Cooperation Agency.
The MOU aims to build capacity for an improved mine waste management mechanism in the country.
Himata said the policy was oriented towards restoring some value to the environment so that the land could be used during and after mine operations.
He said in the absence of a mine waste management policy, the Government was using the Environment Act of 2000 to regulate mine waste.
“A specific policy for mines waste management is what we are developing,” he said.
“We want to use the best available modern technologies, so that whatever latest technologies in terms of monitoring and real time data, must be adopted by companies.”
