The Basamuk Women Landowner Association (BWLOA) of the Ramu Nickel Project area plan to propose to the Ramu Nickel Mine and its caterer NCS catering, that they be considered as a supplier of pork and fish to the mine’s messing facilities in the near future.
Chairperson of the association Marian Suang said with the grant which they were getting from the National Government through the World Bank under the Small Grants Program (SGP), her group would be setting up a piggery project immediately with the view to supply the mine’s messing facilities.
Mrs Suang was speaking at the signing ceremony of the Women In Mining (WIM) Small Grants Program (SGP) contract between the Mineral Resources Authority (MRA) on behalf of the government and her group at Basamuk, Madang last week.
She said apart from a piggery project they would be venturing into fish farming which they would also like to supply to the Ramu Mine’s mess and anyone one who may need their service.
The leader said the SGP was a life changer for her group as this was the first project of this magnitude they had ever been involved in as beneficiaries and thanked the government and the World Bank for this assistance.
The BWLOA is one of 12 women landowner associations and groups from mine impacted areas of the country that have successfully obtained grants from the National Government under the World Banks World Bank Mining Sector Institutional Strengthening Technical Assistance Project 2.
The other groups are from Porgera, Hidden Valley, Simberi, Sinivit and Lihir project areas.
The MRA is proud to be involved in rolling out this initiative as it directly benefits women impacted by mining projects.
